Massage

What are the benefits of Massage?

One of the main benefits of massage is to release tension in taut, overworked sore muscles and the surrounding soft tissues of the body.  Apart from this benefit most people enjoy the experience of touch when administered in a healing and safe environment

The on flow to the central nervous system helps the whole body relax by releasing the ‘happy’ hormones  ( endorphins) which in turn help to decrease stress levels in the body and the mind.

Posturepro physiotherapy integrate massage into their treatments for neck back and leg conditions.

Therapeutic Massage for Athletes :  This type of massage is beneficial for sports people prior to an event after the event to decrease lactic acid build up in the muscles and as rehabilitation if injury is present. Manipulating the body’s soft tissues ( muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments) has been shown to moderate the heart rate and blood flow, reduce muscle tension and spasm and help relieve discomfort and pain leading to performance enhancement and decreasing the risk of over strain injury during sporting activity.

Deep Tissue Massage :

Another name for this is Remedial Massage – This type of massage will relieve severe tension within the muscles and fascia surrounding them . Often due to overuse or repetitive strain injury this type of massage is suitable for people who experience consistent pain or who have sustained  a physical injury resulting in scar tissue or adhesion’s forming at and around the site of injury.

These techniques are quite a firm but precise and are usually targeted to the local area of pathology within the muscle tissue.

Myofascial Release:

Myo ( muscle) Fascia ( sheaths)

This type of massage aims to Free up restrictions of movement in the connective tissue sheaths that encase the muscles and organs of the body. The  Networks of interconnecting sheaths can become immobile and restrict the muscles movement leading to pain adhesion’s and discomfort. When the fascia move freely the muscles will also move with them allowing for optimal freedom of movement and flexibility.

Swedish Massage :

The Long flowing relaxing strokes of  this technique induce a sense of calm and well being while releasing tension in tight stiff sore muscles. The increased circulation and lymph flow oxygenates the cells of the body and assists in lymphatic drainage aiding in detoxifying and rejuvenating the cells – a bit like a spring clean. This type of massage is also called classic massage

Aromatherapy Massage :

Essential oils from plants are super rich in such things as antioxidants and astringents and carmative properties. The oils are chosen to elicit a mood change or to impart  feelings of calm or spiritual harmony . For example if you are stressed and need to achieve a state of calm – then lavender would be a good choice as this has calming properties and is used as an aid to sleep by adding a few drops to bath water in adults and babies before bedtime. But the correct Lavender must be used. Some have stimulating properties.
